Our story

Luna was founded by Karst Hoogsteen, a former Harvard Medical School researcher who is living with the progressive eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Not every startup begins in a garage. Luna started somewhere a little less conventional - a muddy ditch on a university campus.

Night blindness is often associated with darkness, but its impact goes far beyond night time. Even on a bright summer day, high contrast between sunlight and shadow can severely limit vision. For people with night blindness, sunglasses can make shaded areas nearly impossible to see. That’s exactly what happened to Karst. Cycling across campus in broad daylight, he rode straight into a ditch he simply couldn’t distinguish from the shadows ahead. Soaked, covered in mud, and pulling his bike from the water, he made a pivotal decision: to change course and dedicate his career to developing glasses that truly enhance vision for those with sight loss.

Bartiméus Fonds on Luna

One of our supporters, the Bartiméus Fund, talks about the design process of the Luna Glass and about Leen Harrewijn, a valuable member of our testing team, on his experiences with both night blindness and Luna Glass.
